Celine Song knocks it out of the park with Materialists. Although not as strong as Past Lives, her soft more outing hit all the right notes. We follow Lucy, played by Dakota Johnson, a matchmaker who's jaded yet seemingly valid view on love and relationships is interrogated by multiple characters throughout the film. Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans were both excellent in this movie, serving as the vehicle for said interrogation through their own perspectives. Ultimately, Celine Song once again navigates matures themes in a mature way, speaking about one's monetary and economic desire for something you don't have colliding with the very real love you have for someone else, the value you place on materialistic things, and insecurities hidden by those who are perceived as perfect.
