Every few years, a horror movie comes out that absolutely shakes up the game. Curry Barker's Obsession fits that bill to a T. Alongside this game changing film was a performance of the year contender from Inde Navarrette. As a day one Superman and Lois fan, it's so cool seeing her meteoric rise after turning in nothing short of a star making performance. I haven't felt this genuinely creeped out by a horror movie in a long time. Barker not only accomplishes this, but he does it with excellent direction that leans on the actual performances and not so much on visual effects. The use of shadows, lingering camera shots, practical effects, and lnde Navarrette's insanely great facial expressions makes for a truly unique horror experience that will stick with you for a long time. I also really liked the balancing act this movie does with its themes. The idea of consent, being taken advantage of, and of course obsession, is explored in a way that gives the viewer a lot to think about on the way home. With a third act that hits you like a truck, Obsession is a must see and is easily my favorite movie of the year so far.
