A lot of movies over the years have been described as epic, but nothing fits the bill more than Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Nolan takes us on an incredible adventure that explores sacrifice, love, and consequences. Right off the bat, everyone in The Odyssey are doing career best work. Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Annie Hathaway, Zendaya, John Leguizamo, and the entire cast put on an absolute clinic. And although I still think Tom Holland has a better performance in him, this was easily his strongest effort to date. What I loved most about this film was how the adaptation of this many years old story was handled. Nolan perfectly balances the fantastical elements while also grounding it to a relatable level. His portrayal of these characters felt deeply human, which resulted in amazingly emotional sequences, particularly in the third act. The use of practical effects, real locations, and another banger score from Ludwig Göransson made this the best IMAX experience I've ever had. Speaking of the score, I was pleasantly surprised by the scaled back nature of the music. The beautifully somber woodwind instruments and soothing vocals was a much welcomed surprise. After all that, its still hard to even really sum up how I felt watching this film. All I knew was that I was watching something truly special, and a master of his craft delivering what I think is his magnum opus. Go see this movie on the biggest screen with the biggest sound if you can. Its worth every second.
