The Substance is without a doubt the most insane film I've seen in quite a while. I knew going into it that there would be some body horror in this, but holy hell this was next level. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley do an amazing in this movie about self obsession, jealousy, and longing for the old days. I really enjoyed Demi Moore's performance in particular. Her descent in to madness was a spectacle to watch on screen. This film does a great job commenting on unattainable beauty standards, and the price women are often times forced to pay in order to keep up in an industry that is constantly replacing you for someone younger. Ultimately, comparison was the thief of joy for our main character Elisabeth. With a bat shit crazy third act that will stick with you for a long time, The Substance instantly shot up my list of favorite films this year.
