Wow. I did not know where this would go, but I very much enjoyed Nickel Boys. This was a deeply tragic, emotional, and made me angry in all the right ways. On a technical level this movie is gorgeous. The film being entirely from a first person perspective gives a Unique point of view set deep in the Civil rights movement in Florida. The first person camera really puts the viewer in the mindset of our main character Elwood. Director RaMell Ross does a great job immediately establishing the time period and condition the country is in. A lot is said in this film with the camera itself and background sound design more than the dialogue between the characters in certain scenes. I really love this mechanic of the film because it lets the director use subtlety to convey what he wants to get across without having to spell it out for the viewer. Certain scenes feel deeply uncomfortable, and the first-person perspective enhances that and make the surrealist scenes stick with you long after the film is over.
