Sing Sing was a beautifully emotional film about the human condition. It stars Colman Domingo as Divine G, a man incarcerated in Sing Sing Correctional Facility. As expected, Colman Domingo kills it in this role, but for me it was Clarence Maclin, who's playing himself, that puts on a truly star making performance. I knew going into it that a lot of the actors in this were playing themselves, but it really hits home during the credits when you see the real life plays that took part all those years ago. I particularly really enjoyed the directing here as well. The camera had this calmness about it and each shot choice felt deliberate and was filled with just as much emotion as the characters delivered to the screen. I also really enjoyed the parallels between the seemingly endless cycle of producing a play and our main characters' own clemency hearing. Director Greg Kwedar does a great job driving home the dichotomy of doing something you truly love while being locked away from the rest of society. Every moment where characters are dancing and sang casually during rehearsals felt triumphant and filled me with joy but also gave me the crushing reality that they are still in prison shortly after. I'm so glad I got to catch this film in a theater.
